Mount Rushmore National Memorial, situated in the state of South Dakota, America, is a US National Memorial. It has been named after a New York City attorney- Charles E. Rushmore. The distinguishing feature of this structure is that it consists of the monumental faces of four of the former US Presidents, which have been blasted and carved from the white rock.

• First US President George Washington
• Third US President Thomas Jefferson

The four granite faces were carved under the supervision of an American sculptor, Gutzon Borglum and involved the work of more than 400 workers. Each of the faces is around 60 feet high. Lengthwise, the memorial covers over 5 square kilometres.

The idea of developing Mount Rushmore as a tourist attraction and thereby, generate a regular flow of visitors was put forward by a historian called Robinson. It was he who in the year 11924 persuaded Borglum to get a load of the Mount Rushmore and decide whether carving could be done on it.

There’s no entrance fee for the memorial. However, you would need to shell out a few bucks if you want to park your vehicle. This is because the parking facilities are privately owned.

Written by Super User. Posted in Traffic & Transportation

Piazza San Marco, (referred to as ‘St. Mark’s Square’ in English) is the chief public square of Venice, Italy. Except the Piazzale Roma and the Piazzetta (the little Piazza), every other urban space in the city is referred to as ‘Campi,’ meaning fields. It is believed that emperor Napoleon identified it as “the finest drawing room of Europe.”

Today, Venice’s many important buildings lie close to or on this public square. Some of these include the Museum of Archaeology, the offices of the procurators, St. Mark’s Basilica and the tower and the Doge’s Palace.

Restaurants and stylish cafes that occupy the lower floors of the buildings line both sides of the Piazza San Marco. The Caffe Florian is one of its most popular cafes and has been the haunt of many well-known artistes and writers like Henry James and Lord Byron. No wonder, it is one of the favorite tourist destinations of Venice.

You can visit Piazza San Marco at any time of the day, as it looks beautiful throughout the day. However, many people prefer visiting the square in the morning time, when there is relatively lesser crowd. In winter or fall, Piazza San Marco and the surrounding canals assume a misty quality.
